Rancho Mirage

In Riverside County’s Coachella Valley, the desert resort city of Rancho Mirage was named in 1973 when the city was incorporated, but it is also known as the Playground of the Presidents for its popularity with many U.S. leaders. Set on both the 10 and 111, Rancho Mirage is set between Palm Springs and Palm Desert.

Most single-family homes in Rancho Mirage are midcentury modern or Spanish Hacienda-style, clustered within gated communities or country clubs. Standouts include Lake Mirage Racquetball Club’s waterfront homes, Veneto’s sprawling Italianate villas, the senior-only Del Webb Rancho Mirage and the mountain-view estates of Mirada, near The Ritz-Carlton.

Many golf resorts and clubs – like Thunderbird, the city’s first golf course – also offer condos with varying layouts. Mobile home communities include Blue Skies Village, established by Bing Crosby in the 1950s.

Rancho Mirage has long been a second or retirement home for Hollywood and political celebrities. Major streets are named for former locals Frank Sinatra, Dinah Shore and Gerald Ford, and the city’s Eisenhower Health, named for past resident Dwight Eisenhower, includes the first Betty Ford Center.

Golf is arguably Rancho Mirage’s most popular pastime, and courses include those at Thunderbird, Morningside and Tamarisk. Tennis is also popular at country clubs and public courts.

Parks in Rancho Mirage include Blixseth Mountain Park, the Victorian-themed Michael S. Wolfson Park and Rancho Mirage Community Park, where the amphitheater hosts community events.

The Mirada Trail System fans out along Frank Sinatra Drive, the Whitewater River flows southeast through the city, and you’ll find an equestrian center and a few horse trails in town.

Cultural attractions include the Rancho Mirage Library and Observatory, the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert and an Agua Caliente Casino, which hosts music and comedy acts.

Shopping centers throughout the city offer retail and services, with grocery options like Whole Foods, Costco and Gelson’s. There are also more restaurants per capita here than anywhere else in the Coachella Valley.

The city is served by the Palm Springs Unified School District. Of its 28 schools, the only local one is Rancho Mirage Elementary.

Living in the desert resort city of Rancho Mirage is like being on vacation all year long.
