Between Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs, and two mountain ranges, Cathedral City is crossed by Interstate10 and bordered to the west by state Route 111. Much of the northern city is part of the reservation of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. Named for nearby Cathedral Canyon, “Cat City” is home to about 51,500 people, making it one of the largest cities in Riverside County’s Coachella Valley.
Throughout Cathedral City, most single-family homes and condos are mid-sized and either Modern or Spanish Contemporary, dating between the early 1980s and the 2020s. Homes and condos are sometimes in gated developments with HOAs.
Mobile home communities here were generally built in the 1970s. Caliente Sands is open to all ages, while 55-plus age group options include Date Palm Country Club, Palm Springs View Estates, The Canyon, and Tramview Mobile Park.
Cathedral City parks include 7.5-acre Panorama Park; Town Square Park’s interactive, mosaic-tiled Fountain of Life installation; Ocotillo Park’s skate park and basketball courts; and a dog park. Local golf courses are found at Date Palm Country Club, Cimarron Golf Resort, and Desert Princess Palm Springs, and hikers have miles of mountain trails just south and north.
Agua Caliente Cathedral City Casino hosts musical and comedy acts all year; the Perez Road Art District galleries hold a First Fridays Art Walk each month; and downtown’s Festival Lawn hosts huge annual events like the Tejano Music Festival in October and the Hot Air Balloon Festival & Food Truck Fiesta in November.
Grocery stores include Stater Bros. Markets, Trader Joe’s, Cardenas Markets, and Food4Less, as well as Target. Restaurants and vintage shops line state Route 111 between Cathedral City and Rancho Mirage.
Eight of the Palm Springs Unified district’s 28 schools are here, including Cathedral City High School, which has both a winning football team and an International Baccalaureate program.
In the heart of Riverside County’s Coachella Valley, Cathedral City blends desert living with a city vibe.
